University of Madras

I graduated from the University of Madras with a Bachelor degree in English Literature. Soon as I graduated, I had applied for a dozen jobs and I was lucky to be chosen as a sales representative for a Xerox machine company. Though the pay was not great, I had to accept it because I needed to support myself. Though my parents were reasonably well to do, I had two brothers who were almost completing their school education. But I learnt a lot about marketing thanks to my superior who took me along with him in the initial days. I started enjoying my job and after five months of slogging, I finally managed to sell one machine and the happiness it gave me was immense.Anyway, I stuck on to the job for almost a year when I got my admission to do a thesis work on English Literature. That was the longest stretch I had worked for any company.

Bruce Almighty!

A portrait of Bruce Springsteen on the ramp le...

I am a big fan of Bruce Springsteen and I could not believe it when my friends told me that Bruce Springsteen was visiting India and Bangalore has been chose as a venue for his show. This happened way back in the late 1980s. I am from Chennai, which is about five hours drive from Bangalore. So I decided to go to Bangalore two days in advance so that I could also spend a couple of days with my friends from Bangalore. We made reservations for our tickets to the concert and we were ready to go. And what a show it turned out to be! Till date, the memory of Bruce singing and dancing is green in my memory. I have never attended a program as grand as that concert. With fans screaming

and dancing along with Bruce, the longer the concert went on, the better it was.

Destiny of my dream

The place I would love to visit is Singapore. I have heard of so many nice features of the City. The city is supposedly one of the cleanest cities in the world. Apart from this, the city is also considered a shopping paradise especially since Singapore is a free port that attracts no duty on capital goods. There are many

multi-cuisine restaurants that offer differnt types of food. Singapore is considered an electronic city where you can shop for electronic goods of all kinds and all makes manufactured in various countries. Singapore is the perfect place with a perfect blend of Western and eastern cultures.

Nepal is cool

The best place that I have visited so far is undoubtedly Nepal. With such rich culture and mountainous terrains, Nepal is any traveller’s dream place. The weather in Nepal is pleasant in summer and cold in winter. Surrouded by mountains with snow-clad peaks, Nepal is such a scenic beauty which has to be seen to be believed. The people of Nepal are very friendly and plenty of affordable accomadation is available for tourists. There are many scenic spots in and around the capital city of Kathmandu. It is a point of interest that Nepal has eight of the world’s ten highest mountains including the highest, Mount Everest.

New is Attitude

My New Year’s resolution was to turn a new leaf and change my attitude. I was always a diffident introvert and I promised myself that I would do myself a favour by opening up and try to become more confident. So far I think I am doing reasonably well according to my friend. Whenever I was not sure of myself, I used to shy away from the situation. I am trying to face up to any such situation. Also, as an introvert, I never used to voice my opinion about any subject that borders on any kind of controversy. Atleast, I am talking out to my friends and even have improved to the point of telling them what I feel. So much for my new attitude.

April Showers

Here we are in mid-April and the daffodils have only just appeared in the garden. My Magnolia is reluctant to bud and my Forsythia has a few tentative yellow blossoms but almost no leaves. Last week it snowed, and the week before that it was minus 8 at night. I never did believe in global warming and surely this is proof enough that natural variations in temperature will occur all the time. I even read in the press that some people are predicting a new ice age. As far as I can see,  Mother Earth does exactly as she pleases and the impact that mankind is making is less than even one of her volcano explosions each year. It all balances itself out and one of these days we will be laughing at the scientists who claim the earth is hotting up.

What has happened to “The Economist”?

I bought the Economist the other day because I needed something to read on the train. It is quite different these days, though, and I was disappointed in it. For a start, the articles seem to be getting shorter all the time. Such complex issues as the financial difficulties of Greece or the political unrest in Nigeria are whittled down to a half page summary and this can only mean that the facts are skewed and the conclusions hasty. There is also a breezy tone which reminds me of a public school debating society where the speakers are all young know-it-alls with no experience of real life. The only thing I recognized and appreciated was the last page summary of economic data. At least they haven’t changed that too much and it is still possible to see at a glance where the real movers and shakers are active.

Family roast dinners

Roast beef
Image via Wikipedia

There is always a good reason to have a family roast dinner. I just like to have the children back in the house and I cook their favourite things just the way they like them so that they will remember their childhood. Chicken is the easiest to do, and I make my own secret recipe for stuffing. My husband likes roast beef but I don’t find it easy to get the Yorkshire pudding right. He doesn’t like lamb so much but I persuade him now and then to have it for my sake. The only one I  never make is pork because it is too fat and no one ever eats the apple sauce. Next Christmas I am determined to try goose. All the trimmings need to be there, but the most important ingredient of all is my lovely family all around.

Fire Safety

Fire extinguishers are an important component of any home fire safety plan. Home owners should have several fire extinguishers located throughout the home (i.e., kitchen, garage, basement, etc…). It is imperative that home owners ensure that they have the correct fire extinguisher in the correct location based on the possible fire that can start (i.e., grease in the kitchen, paper and chemicals in the garage, etc…). In addition, the types of fire extinguishers, fire safety is enhanced by safe practices. Home owners should always handle chemicals and cooking materials according to manufacturer’s suggestions. Finally, smoke detectors and a fire escape plan should be installed and tested periodically so that the family knows what to do in the event the unthinkable happens.
