To understand how fire Extinguishers work you must understand how fires work. Fires need three things to exist, heat, and fuel and oxygen. Fire extinguishers are used to smother the fire, thus removing the oxygen from the fire and putting it out. Depending on the thing that is on fire, a normal ABC fire extinguisher may not be the best thing to put out the fire. The chemicals in fire extinguishers may be corrosive to some metals, such as those used in aircraft and MRI machines. The Last thing to remember about using small fire extinguishers is that if you do not understand how to use it, it is better to let someone more experienced handle it.
